Green hydrogen production in Linz reduces CO2 emissions by 90,000 tonnes per year

Our company, LAT Nitrogen Linz, and Austria's largest electricity provider, Verbund, are planning the construction of a state-of-the-art hydrogen production plant and associated warehouse in the chemical park in Linz. With a planned electrolysis capacity of 60 MW and production of up to 7,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, this would be the first industrial-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production project in Austria.

Sustainable industrial production

The environmental and climate significance of this project is remarkable: the new plant will reduce the amount of natural gas that was previously required for generation by 10%, leading to a reduction in COemissions of around 90 000 tonnes per year. Power for the plant will be provided by renewable energies such as hydro, wind and solar power.

"With the new plant, the city will have yet another chance to switch to climate-neutral technologies. On a regional and national level, hydrogen is one of the energy sources with the greatest potential for the future. Linz does not only focus on innovation and technology, but also shows how industry and sustainability can go hand in hand," emphasises Dietmar Prammer, Linz City Councillor for Planning.

"Sustainability is not just a step, it is a path that we and our partners walk with conviction. Together with Verbund AG and the city, we are embarking on the path to climate neutrality and turning obstacles into milestones. We would like to thank the city of Linz for its good cooperation and support during the transformation," adds Leonhard Werner, construction manager of LAT Nitrogen Linz.

The geopolitical significance of hydrogen

"The topic of hydrogen is of great geopolitical importance for Austria. And with the Green Ammonia Linz project in particular, we are showing how the decarbonisation of Austrian industry can succeed. We are very pleased that the authorities of the city of Linz are so actively supporting LAT Nitrogen's decarbonisation path and thus the Austrian industry and Linz as a location, and will enable us to implement this project quickly," says Susanna Zapreva, Member of the Board of Directors of Verbund AG and Director of Renewable Energy (CRO).
